Growing up in the 21st century is a special time during which television, media, and music play a critical role in shaping identity in America, particularly among American youth. As a child, seeing a character representative of their culture is important. It directly impacts self-identity and cultural connection. There is a relationship between low self-esteem and negative media portrayals of racial groups, as well as an association between poor self-esteem and the scarcity of portrayals of culture or race.

Seeing and having an African American Power Ranger on a television show was not only important because it allowed children to relate to the character, but it also, on a deeper level, empowered children to identify with the character (a hero). Thank you, Zack Taylor, for being a positive representation.
